What’s a dental onlay?

As you can see from the photos, a dental onlay is a restoration that covers at least a cusp of a tooth.  An onlay can be made out of different materials and in the past gold used to be more popular.  As time went on, more and more people started to prefer a more cosmetic solution for dental restorations.  So why onlays, you might ask?  An onlay falls between a dental crown and a filling.  When the damage on a tooth is too big for a filling to restore, and if there is still plenty of tooth structure, then an onlay is usually a better and more conservative choice.  As you can see from the above photos, only the damaged area of the tooth is restored.  If that particular tooth were to receive a crown, then the whole tooth would have to be cut down.  But of course, we all know that sometimes it’s unavoidable to have the crowns done, which actually are more common than onlays.  And also, a dental ceramic onlay is far more stronger than a dental filling of the same size.

Another 6 Month Cosmetic Braces case

Ladies and gentlemen, we have recently completed another 6 Month Cosmetic Braces on this wonderful lady in about 5 months! Before the treatment she was not very happy with her upper and lower crowded teeth. Now 5 months later, she is able to smile with confidence and loving her new smile!  We were able to give her a great smile in a reasonable amount of time.  Remember, this treatment does not replace full comprehensive braces that most young people get.  This is a cosmetic procedure that is perfect for most adults, who aren’t happy with their smiles and would like to smile better.  Please give us a call at 425-451-7388 if you like to talk to Dr. Nelson Chen about this awesome procedure in Bellevue.  Dr. Nelson Chen was the first general dentist on the Eastside to offer this cosmetic treatment.

New dental veneers and crowns

This is a follow-up of a case that I previously wrote about.  This patient received 2 all-ceramic crowns and 4 dental veneers to complete her transformation from canine to canine.  Her upper right implant bridge will eventually need to be replaced to giver her smile a more uniform look.  The patient was extremely happy and satisfied with her new smile.

Dental implants in Bellevue

We recently put a crown on a dental implant that was surgically placed in the patient’s mouth about 3 months ago.  The patient was extremely happy with the outcome and she doesn’t need to wear a flipper now.  Do you have a missing tooth?  No problem!  Dr. Chen right here in Bellevue, WA can give you your smile back!  There are many ways to restore missing teeth and dental implants are one of them, so give us a call at 425-451-7388.  Your Bellevue dentist Dr. Chen will be more than happy to discuss your options with you.

Dental Veneers and Crowns

This morning we spent 4 hours on this case with 2 new crowns and 4 veneers.  As you can see from the first photo, the patient wasn’t very happy with her current smile, especially with the 2 crowns on the upper right canine and right central incisor.  In order to improve her smile, the 2 old crowns and 4 new veneers will be necessary to transform her looks.  You might ask, why are those 2 teeth so dark?  It is because they have been discolored by the root canal treatments done many years ago.  Almost all teeth will discolor after root canals.  Before this patient left the office, we made her a set of provisional veneers and crowns so she can test-drive the new teeth.

Bellevue Dental Emergency

This patient came in to our dental office this morning (Saturday) and was holding a tooth in her hand.  We had never seen her before but she looked like she needed some help.  She returned in a few hours and we were able to seat her and do a proper examination on what needed to be done.  Her tooth #8 originally had an all ceramic crown and she was holding it in her hand.  It had broken off from the tooth, along with the build-up material.  However, not so lucky was the tooth #9 which has\d a horizontal fracture which fortunately did not involve the nerve.  We were able to her numb her up.  We cleaned the inside of the crown using a porcelain etch, then applied Monobond the porcelain primer.  The broken crown was the cemented.  After the crown was put back, we were able to fix the other 2 broken teeth using a layering technique for composite resins.  It means that we used different opacities of the resin (dentin shade, body shade, enamal shade) and were able to achieve near-perfection of the restorations after contouring and shaping of the composite restorations.  The patient was once again, able to smile, even though her lips were all swollen from the fact that she had fallen on the concrete, breaking her teeth.

Can Too Much Sugar Make You Stupid?

Can Too Much Sugar Make You Stupid?

USA—Dentists have long warned that too much sugar can rot a person’s teeth, but scientists at UCLA have discovered evidence that too much soda and candy could also rot a person’s brain.

The study, which was published in the Journal of Physiology, discovered how a diet that is “steadily high” in fructose can slow down the function of the brain, impairing memory and learning ability, the Los Angeles-based university said in a May 15 press release. Those adverse effects, they say, can emerge in as little as six week’s time, but can be counteracted to some degree by adding omega-3 fatty acids to one’s diet. [Source]
